Black and White

These are charcoal drawings that are partway to being paintings.  I drew in charcoal on paper.  I then brushed on acrylic medium so that the charcoal was fixed, blacks were deepened, and interesting smears happened.  After that I mounted the paper onto canvases with a 2-inch edge so that the drawing can be viewed directly, with no intervening glass.  Each work is 30 by 40 inches.  The subject matter is biological - cells, views from microscopes, bones; patterns inspired by textiles; and various things I happen to run into and put into sketchbooks for inspiration.

small studies

These are small drawings that I made possibly as studies for larger drawings or paintings.  Sizes are 9 x 12 inches.  Media are various kinds of drawing pencils that respond to water, with acrylic medium as a fixative.  Drawings are on paper mounted on painting panels.
